Traditional Home Remedies & the Yoga of Slowing Down

Winter has arrived in our home with the usual sniffles, coughs, and sleepy eyes. While no one enjoys being unwell, I’ve come to see these moments as a gentle reminder to slow down, rest, and return to simple rituals that nourish us from the inside out.

In our family, healing isn’t just about medicine—it’s about care, presence, and traditions passed down through generations.

Some of our favourite winter rituals include:

  • Honey and lemon tea to soothe sore throats.

  • Hibiscus tea with cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and lemon for a warming boost.

  • A spoonful of Manuka honey.

  • Jarabe de miel con aceite de coco y limón—a family remedy made with honey, coconut oil, and fresh lemon.

  • Homemade soups filled with nourishing ingredients.

One ritual I never skip is making chicken (or beef) bone broth. I batch-cook it and freeze it in 300–350 ml jars, ready to heat whenever someone needs a little extra comfort. Sometimes I pour it into a mug, and other times I sip it straight from the jar.

To me, it’s more than food—it’s a hug from the inside.

Yoga teaches us that wellbeing isn’t only found on the mat. Sometimes it’s choosing rest over rushing, preparing a nourishing meal, or sitting quietly with a warm cup of tea. These simple moments of mindfulness are just as much a practice as any yoga pose.

The remedies I share are part of our family’s traditions and are intended to support comfort and wellbeing. They are not a substitute for professional medical advice.

What are the healing rituals your family returns to each winter? I’d love to hear them.

Shanti to all,

Allison
